The Shibu Uchiwa Shomaru from Kurikawa Shoten is a hand-crafted fan made in Kutami City, one of Japan’s three historic centers of Uchiwa production. The tradition dates back to 1600, when a monk introduced the craft from the famous fan-making city of Marugame to Kutami.
The fine washi paper is coated with persimmon tannin, a natural treatment that strengthens the paper, protects it from insects, and develops a warm patina over time.
This fan is also traditionally regarded as a symbol of good fortune and is often given as a gift. Its slender form and longer handle make it especially practical in the kitchen: perfect for cooling sushi rice or for controlling heat and flames when cooking over charcoal grills.
Kurikawa Shoten is the last workshop in Kutami preserving this craft. With minimal effort, the fan generates a strong airflow. Beyond its use as a kitchen tool, it is equally suitable as a travel companion or a decorative piece for the wall.
