The Hirachawan are a reinterpretation of the traditional Japanese rice bowl by designer Masahiro Mori. Their unusually wide and shallow shape moves beyond the conventional idea of a rice bowl, creating a generous canvas for Hakusan Toki’s diverse patterns. The gently curved silhouette gives the bowls a distinctive lightness – understated in form, expressive in detail.
The Hirachawan reflect Mori’s approach to contemporary Japanese tableware: rethinking familiar forms, expanding their function and making thoughtful design part of everyday life. Suitable for rice, side dishes, small servings or desserts, they combine versatility with a distinct aesthetic presence.
The Hirachawan received the Good Design Award in 1993 and the Long Life Design Award in 2004. They are produced by Hakusan Toki in Hasami, a region in Nagasaki Prefecture with a long tradition of porcelain making.
