These delicate glass-bead ornaments are crafted in the Bohemian Krkonoše Mountains, following a tradition that had almost disappeared. Each bead is handmade over an open flame, then assembled into stars, snowflakes, and many other shapes. The spider motif refers to an old folktale in which a spider decorated the Christmas tree of a poor family with a fine web that shimmered like silver and gold in the morning light. To this day, spiders on the tree are considered bringers of good luck.
The technique of creating hollow, silvered glass beads dates back to the 19th century and survives today almost exclusively in northern Czechia. In 2020, this remarkable craft was added to UNESCO’s List of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Each piece is handmade and therefore a unique little treasure from a singular Bohemian workshop - ornaments that enchant even those who don’t usually connect with festive traditions.
