The traditional gondolier shoes 'Furlane' are still hand-sewn in Italy, just like decades ago. Then as now, they come from Friuli, the region in northeastern Italy, and were introduced to Venice in the 50s, where a few types can still be bought in some small shoe shops today. For years now the Süper Store is having them made in colored velvet and lined with cotton, making them comfortable to wear even barefoot. The soles are made from bicycle tire rubber.
Furlans can be worn outside in dry weather like espadrilles, but they are also very suitable as slippers. If you are between two sizes and intend to wear the slippers as slippers with socks, you might want to choose a size larger.
