This bowl is handcrafted at the 'Saburo Sumitani' workshop in Takaoka, Japan, which specializes in the traditional Japanese craft of Nambu Tekki, a special form of cast iron.

The design is by Tadahiro Baba. Born in Kyoto in 1930, this renowned Japanese designer created works deeply rooted in the traditional art of Nambu Tekki (cast iron) that are simultaneously characterized by a distinctive, modern sense of humor. Takaoka is located in the Toyama region of Japan, which is famous for cast iron, and whose manufacturing tradition dates back 400 years.
This heavy, smooth-textured bowl are coated with a layer of varnish containing urushiol and are therefore rustproof.
