The Welsh manufacturer Hafod Grange has been making paperweights for over 50 years. In the middle of the Margam Nature Park - high in the mountains of South Wales - are the gardens and meadows tended by Hafod Grange, where the plants for their paperweights thrive. Collected and sorted by hand, the flowers and plant parts are dried using a number of sophisticated techniques, then embedded in clear polyester resin. The resulting pieces are then turned and polished individually. In order to embed the filigree flowers and plant parts without destroying them - as would be the case with molten glass - a technique that has been developed over the years and great care is required. The paperweights were first produced in 1968 by Barry Needham, who was suffering from muscular dystrophy, as a form of therapy. Hafod Grange received the Prince of Wales Shield for Quality Crafts in 1975. The Design Council UK awarded the 'Dandelion Paperweight' the Tarian label.
