The original stork scissors were not scissors, but clamps that were used by midwives in the 19th century to tie off the umbilical cord after giving birth. The original beaks were crooked instead of straight, rounded instead of pointed, and the knives were blunt. In their free time, midwives liked to do needlework and always kept their medical tools close at hand in their sewing baskets. The strange looking stork clips were later often found in the contents of antique sewing baskets. In the course of time, these stork clamps must have turned into the scissors that we know and love today. They are extremely suitable for light fabric and thread work, but also for paper work through to trimming beards or house plants.
